The rebirth of the Drent Vision and the Gazelle offset printing machines
DG press Services BV in the Netherlands has recently decided to start in-house production of the Drent Vision, the Gazelle 6T and the Gazelle 9S web offset printing machines. Market demands prompted this young company to take that step.
During the glorious years of Drent in the Netherlands, more than 200 Visions and 1000 Gazelles have been installed worldwide and these machines are still widely used for printing business forms and direct mail as well as pharmaceutical and many labeling applications.
Shaft driven Gazelle machines
Servo-driven rotary printing machines such as the Vision may have gained a dominant market position, however, the shaft driven web offset printing machines are still preferred in certain parts of the world.
Especially by printers who do not want to be dependent on service organizations for repair and maintenance of advanced and complex control and driving technologies. The Gazelle printing machines are designed in such a way, that the printer itself will be able to maintain and execute repairs with components which can be obtained locally, without the help of external service organizations. The purchase of a shaft driven printing machine is significantly lower than that of servo driven machinery.
Due to the fact that the market for business forms and direct mail has been greatly reduced, therefore, the demand for narrow web rotary offset machines has declined considerably.
For many printing machine manufacturers it appears no longer profitable to continue producing these types of printing machines. Even, several well-known manufacturers have gone bankrupt as a result of this.
This was what happened to Drent Goebel, but by the resurrection of a service company for servicing and supplying parts for the existing Drent machines in the market. Despite the shrinking market, there is still a great opportunity for DG press serviceS in this market to continue and even expand. For users of the Gazelle printing machines it is important that the production of such printing machines will be continued, after all, in this way they will be assured of reliable supply of spare parts. The need for adjustments to their existing machines Gazelle is growing more substantially than incidentally. Thanks to DG press ServiceS’ expertise they will very well be able to participate, and to meet the demand for new shaft driven web offset printing machines.
The Gazelle has proved during its existence to be a reliable press, a machine that is easy to maintain and little liable to technical malfunctions. Users of the Gazelle printing machines have warmly welcomed the decision of DG press ServiceS that the press machines types 6T, and 9S will be brought back into production. The new Gazelles will be fitted with the latest PLC technology. DG press ServiceS has little overhead cost and they will be well able in this way, to be competitive in the market with the new Gazelle printing equipment and contribute to improving the current market value of the existing Gazelles.
The servo driven Vision
The successor of the Gazelle was the Vision. The then Drent factory introduced the first narrow web offset printing machine, driven with servo-engines in the world.
Since its introduction some 12 years ago, over 200 worldwide servo driven Visions have been installed. Besides taking the Gazelle printing machine into production again, DG press ServiceS also decided to produce the Vision in-house, completed with the latest modifications and upgrades, increasing the reliability and practical use of this machine even further. The modern Vision will also be driven by the latest generation Indra Drive M servo engines according to the latest technology both in terms of servo drives and PLC technology.
The new Vision is unique with respect to the ink fountain which can be integrated, the registry system, video and / or UV system: the customer can choose from all possible solutions. DG press ServiceS is neutral and not connected to any vendor whatsoever. In this way an optimal solution can be realized for every customer requirements and/or application.
However, there are more possibilities concerning the Vision. By using the Vision Modules available in the market, DG press ServiceS will be able to deliver all kind of machine configurations, either new or refurbished, or cleaned and checked. During the coming Labelexpo (stand number: 11P132) in Brussels DG press ServiceS will show a used Vision module not to be distinguished from a new one. This shows to what extend DG press serviceS is capable and can also meet the company's desire for reliable and economical web offset machines for both the existing market (business forms, direct mail) as well as for new markets such as labels, packaging, etc.
In the short term DG press ServiceS will produce an upgrade package for the Vision, allowing both new and used Visions ideally suited for printing of plastic films for various packaging applications. This makes the Vision a serious alternative to modern variably-sized machines using sleeve technology. Both existing machines and new machines with such an upgrade can be made suitable for printing all kinds of material for the packaging industry.
